Riding in Brnaze, Croatia

I would like to share my refuge with you. It’s not so easy to find, for it is a little place marked by one lone sign on the main road, not advertised by flashy lights, or giant ads. It doesn’t have to shout to attract attention, leave it to horse lovers to spread the word when they find a “good” place to be, as do their non-horsey friends and family when they discover they can watch lessons or just relax in comfort and good company.

What makes Riding Club Alamo special? A particular blend of expertise and hospitality, wonderful well trained horses, and an atmosphere made rich by the air of this wide land, the generosity of the family and of course, the smells of great wine, and specialties prepared the local way.

The Club was founded by, built and is now managed by Damir Vukasović, a man that has been with horses for over 30 years, most of which as a licensed instructor, and so has even raised some of the top riders you hear about in Croatia who also represent the national team abroad. Completely smitten with his animals, careful and precise, it takes one glance to see the quality of his care for his horses, tack and barn. His wife gives her input into the surroundings, and thanks to her hands tulips are now blossoming in front of the terrace, and small flowers line the outside of the barn. Whether sitting outside or inside by the fireplace the atmosphere is homely and friendly. She is also quite the expert on desserts if you believe me, and you should, for I’ve tried them! Their two daughters have also been riding since they were small, and the younger helps out with the horses and lessons.

Not only experienced in jumping and dressage Damir has run the Alka for many years. This spectacle organized the first weekend of August is specific to the town of Sinj and boasts a long history, having been established in 1715 celebrating victory over the Turks. Great crowds gather to see the knights gallop full speed and try to place the ring (alka) onto their lance. The one who collects the most points in three races is the winner.

I invite you to sit with Damir, his family and friends; you are sure to hear many stories about this historically important part of Croatia, and about the many horses he’s worked with in his lifetime.

The horses that you can take a lesson with or go out on trail are schooled and responsive, but most importantly, safe. The beginner can take his or her first steps into riding with confidence both in their trainer and their horse, while intermediate and advanced riders can ask their mounts for more exacting movements in the schooling ring or out in the open.

The countryside is made for riding, with wide open fields and rolling hills, distant mountains and the banks of the river Cetina. During the summer some of the horses enjoy a swim halfway through the trail ride in the areas where the river forms large ponds. Before we set off on a trail ride, each ride is assessed for his riding ability and suited to an appropriate horse. Alamo’s horses are fit and require at least very good basic skills and the ability to ride independently. Shorter and longer day rides as well as several day excursions can be arranged, let us know what you’re up for!

There are 8 horses currently at Alamo, from the oldest Bisera, to the youngest who is only a year old. I will mention Bisera especially because she is an experienced mare for use in riding for the handicapped. Her gentle, careful nature has put many smiles on children’s faces and given those with disabilities a way to better their coordination and strength.

And who am I, the author of this blog? My name is Dina, and I will do my best to acquaint you with the people and horses, get you set up for your ride, accompany you on trails as one of your two guides and take professional photographs so that you have souvenirs to take home with you. Whether you’re just passing through or would like to stay and explore for a while I can help you with your travel arrangements, translate (English, Croatian, solid Italian, and some French) and help you feel at home at Riding Club Alamo. I’ve been riding for over 13 years at various barns with various instructors, starting in the US and now in Croatia, and have worked as an instructor here and abroad. I’m also a graduated biologist, and can tell you plenty about all that Croatia has to offer.

Information on how to find us: Sinj is located around 40km from the city of Split. The Riding Club is in Brnaze, a town that is on the way to Sinj, 200m past the crossing for Trilj, if you are coming from the direction of Split. Having passed the crossing, on your right side you will pass a sign with a shopping cart and GETRO written on it, and then make the next possible turn, it’s rather sharp, so be careful.

Right on the turn, among many other signs you will see a jumping horse and rider confirming that you’re heading in the right direction! Follow the road which will turn you to the left, and follow it straight for another 300m. There will be a road turning right, and there you will already see the riding ring. If you are coming from another direction or need more detailed instructions, don’t hesitate to contact me.
